Everyone knows why I'm called Everblaze. Like, everyone. "Oh, well, his mum accidentally left him in a bush during a wildfire, but he survived, hence his name," That would be the typical response from any wolf you asked about my name. Here's a warning: Don't believe any of them. They don't know what happened that night. They weren't there at the wildfire. Since you weren't there at the fire either, here is my story.
This incident happened when a five-month-old me was being carried around by my mum when soft, furry paws landed somewhere behind Mum and I. Suspicious, Mum turned back. There were only a few trees and lots of grass and pebbles. There was obviously no one stalling us. Mum shook her head, probably thinking she was dreaming and continued trudging along the wild plain.
A while later, I heard extra footsteps. I then yelped to alert Mum of the footsteps. She dropped me on the ground and turned around once again. There was still no one behind us. I felt puzzled and foolish; why wasn't there anyone following us? I was sure I had heard footsteps. I then shook my head and moved on.
As I passed another tree, my hackles rose, sensing something flying towards me. I instinctively leapt forward in that split second, and then I heard something slam on the ground exactly where I had been a second ago. Bam! Terror gripped me as I turned; a cougar stood before, snarling ferociously.
Suddenly, Mum swiped a paw at the cougar from behind and a fierce fight started as the cougar and Mum circled each other, trading blows and growling loudly. I could only watch in horror from behind a massive rock. Just then, Mum's back was facing me and the cougar spotted me. It met my eyes and it dashed towards me.
I whined anxiously and raced across the damp grass as fast as I could, with the cougar hot on my heels. We zigzagged through trees, bushes, rocks, and mud. Now and then I would turn to check on whether the cougar was gaining on me or not, and he was sprinting towards me, face full of determination. Since I was looking behind, I unknowingly collided with another wolf a year older than me.
"Ouch!" I cried.
"How dare you enter the Moonstone Pack territory? I'll teach you a lesson!" The wolf snarled, swiping at my head. The smirking wolf was the last thing I saw before I fainted.

When I finally woke up, I found myself in the darkest corner of a cave with Mum and Dad talking anxiously just above me. When they noticed that I was awake, they both heaved a sigh of relief.
"How long have I fainted?" I asked Mum as she helped me get up.
"Almost an hour," answered Mum, as I held my face in pain. "Black hit you quite hard, didn't he?" asked Mum.
"Who's Black?" I questioned Mum as Dad gave me some herbs as medicine. Mum moved so she wouldn't block my view, and I saw them. Two wolves, one grey, and the other dark grey were talking at the cave entrance. The dark grey one seemed to be cowering under the grey wolf, who appeared to be reprimanding the dark grey one.
"Black, I am disappointed by your behaviour. As my pup, I am disgraced to see you knocking a young pup unconscious!" The grey wolf was saying.
"Dad, it had passed the Moonstone Pack territory!" protested the dark grey wolf.
"Didn't you see that it was a pup?" countered the grey wolf. Black lowered his head and muttered, "Sorry, Dad."
I turned to Dad. "Who are they?"
"They're the Alpha and his pup, Black," replied Dad, forcing the herbs into my mouth. They were disgusting, but then Dad added, "your Mum was amazing. She managed to chase away the cougar!"
I turned to Mum, who blushed. "It's nothing," she muttered.
I looked around. "Where exactly are we?" I asked.
"Where?" repeated Mum. "We're in the Moonstone Pack territory, to be exact, in the Pack's den."
I noticed several other wolves sleeping in the den and that it was almost nighttime. The father-and-pup Alpha pair had finally stopped arguing. I overheard the Alpha give Black the punishment of cleaning up the leftover bones from their earlier kill. While Black sulked and stomped off, the Alpha, Star, approached us.
"I'm so sorry about what happened," Star apologised. "My pup overreacts sometimes. Is the pup fine?"
"Yes, he is," assured Mum. "However, he needs rest," she added, casting me a come-on-you-need-rest look.
Dad, on the contrary, looked worried. "We're from the Fire Legends Pack, but they left us in a pickle. May we stay here for the night?"
"Of course!" agreed Star. "Oh, and by the way, your siblings have reached the territory borders," added Star, turning to me.
Now it was my turn to heave a sigh of relief. My parents did so too. At least my siblings were alright.
The grass rustled as running feet pounded up. My brother and sister raced up to me and checked my body for injuries.
"Are you fine, Everblaze?" one of the wolves, who had black, grey, and white patches on his fur, asked me.
"Yes, Patches," I said frankly.
"Thank *Patrick you're alright!" exclaimed the other wolf, who was the spitting image of me, save for several spots on her head, who was my sister, Moon. However, when my parents had their backs turned, she muttered, "Or else I'll have to take the blame." My ears drooped sadly.
"Moon, Patches, Everblaze needs rest. Come on, we need to talk about the arrangements with the Alpha," beckoned Mum. The four wolves then started to talk to Star. I then snuggled into the corner of the cave and stared at the countless stars in the dark sky.
As distracted as I was, I heard someone snort somewhere near me. Surprised, I turned my head. Black was carrying several bones in and out of the cave, making a small pile of bones in the cave. He saw me and glared. I gulped. This was not the best start to my life in the Moonstone Pack.
~
The next morning, I was shaken awake by a wolf.
"Hey," the wolf said.
I frowned and turned onto my back. "Just five more minutes," I yawned.
"No, Everblaze. It's time for breakfast," persuaded Mum.
"Fine," I gave in, getting up from the hard, smooth, rock floor. I felt my head. It had recovered from yesterday already. Smiling, I followed Mum out of the cave.
Mum lead me out to a dead goat with the head, hind legs, and hind body missing.
"Go and take your share," cajoled Mum. I trotted over to the goat and tugged at one of the front legs. The goat leg tore off and I chewed at the meat hungrily, tearing off bits of tender meat and I gnawed the bone.
"Oh, right, Everblaze," said Mum, "To apologise for everything, Star is appointing Dad and I the Betas. From now on, we are second in command," Mum explained.
I gasped, putting down my goat leg. "That's amazing!" I cried in astonishment.
Mum nodded. "This means we are second to get our bite from the kill, and Dad and I will be given some job! However," she lowered her voice, "Black isn't happy. Watch out!"
I gobbled down the last of the goat leg. "Okay, I'll go and play!" Mum then left to join Dad.
I turned. The pup's play area had some rocks, small hills, and an open area. I squealed excitedly and bounded towards the little hills.
Once I was in the play area, I started climbing one small hill. I had almost reached the top when someone's paw stepped on my grey paw. Someone's black paw. I looked up to see a smirking black wolf. Black.
"I can't believe Everblaze, the pup of the Betas, can barely climb a tiny mound!" Black sneered.
I cringed and whined as I attempted to reach the top of the hill.
"Looks like you won't become Alpha," snickered Black. "You can't even climb a hill!" At the last word, he let go of my paw. I tumbled down and landed at the bottom with a thump! Yelping in pain, I could barely get up when someone pulled me away from the foot of the hill.
Whoever was pulling me lugged me behind the Pack Cave. When they let go of me, I panted and looked at the wolf. I froze. The wolf had black skin. Black again! I instinctively tried to escape, but then 'Black' grabbed me again.
"I'm not Black. I'm Diamond, Black's sister. I'm helping you because I've heard or worse bullying cases and hoped you wouldn't be picked on," the wolf explained. I soon slowly accepted Diamond.
"Bro always bullies the people he hates," complained Diamond, who said I could call her Dia.
I stopped short. "If that's true, then why does he hate me?" I wondered.
"Probably because you have suddenly been promoted to the Beta pup," suggested Diamond, " and Beta pups can also become Alpha,"
Realisation suddenly dawned on me.
"Anyway, thanks," I added.
"You're welcome," smiled Diamond.
*Patrick is the Noble Wolf God, all the wolves respect him.
Later that day, Dad invited me somewhere near the Pups' area.
"Where are you bringing me, Dad?" I asked. "I still want to play tag with Dia!"
"You'll love this, I promise," Dad said as he brought me to a dirt-covered path surrounded by small stones.
I stopped short. My jaw was left dangling open. A small gasp escaped from my mouth. On the dirt path were around five wolves, one was Star, while I did not recognise the other four wolves. However, I did notice that the four seemed to be in a hunting position as they trapped a giant moose trying to escape. Star ordered, "Surround it!"
The wolves howled as they surrounded the moose, snapping their jaws like Amazon crocodiles at their future lunch. The moose attempted to escape and head-butt a chocolate brown wolf, but then the other wolves at the back attacked it at the same time, causing the wolf to fall. All the wolves then pounced on it, swiping their forepaws and biting the moose until it succumbed to its wounds.
"Good job!" praised Star. The wolves then got up from the moose carcass, panting heavily. I only just realised that I had been staring at the party so long I forgot to blink. Dad ruffled my fur and approached Star.
"Good morning, Everblaze and Nighty!" Star said, turning to Dad and I.
"Good morning, Star," replied Dad as he bowed, stretching his forepaws on the ground and placing his chin on his paws. Star then nodded at Dad, who straightened up and looked at me. I suddenly realised why he was. I desperately attempted to bow too, which went completely wrong, resulting in me falling over, but the Star added, "You don't have to bow. You're still a pup. It's fine," he assured me. I nodded and got up.
"Hey Star!" another wolf interrupted, bowing at Star. "Sky is here," The wolf, which turned out to be the chocolate brown wolf from earlier, added.
"I know. You have enough on your hands as the Gamma wolf already," replied Star, watching a black wolf approach the seven wolves.
"Dad, what's a Gamma wolf?" I asked Dad.
"A Gamma wolf is third in command, and is in charge of hunting," explained Dad, indicating the brown wolf.
"That's right," cut in Star, "I'm very sorry but my mate and the Luna, Sky, needs me," he told us before sprinting towards Sky.
"Dad, could I learn how to hunt?" I asked.
Dad smiled. "Of course, you can, Everblaze!" he assured me.
"That's awesome!" I cheered, punching the air with my forepaws.
"Alright, Everblaze, I have to work as River guard. Don't leave the territory, okay? Go find Mum,"
"Sure!" I made my way towards the Pack den, where Mum is resting.
~
Inside, I found Mum sleeping in the den. I trotted towards her.
"Mum, wake up!" I shook Mum continuously.
"Everblaze, go find Patches or Moon instead," Mum said through snores.
"Oh," I replied, before walking out of the den.
I soon found Moon near the Training Grounds, leading towards the river.
"Wait for me, Moon!" I cried, dashing to catch up with my sister.
"What are you doing here, Everblaze?" Moon turned, staring at me, giving me the chance to catch up with her.
"Mum asked me to play with you!" I said. "Wait, what are you doing here?" I suddenly asked.
Moon glowered at me. "Ain't it obvious?" she said, indicating the marker at the end of the territory, "I'm going to the mountains,"

"Wait, what?" I exclaimed, shocked at my sister. But she had already gone.
"Moon! Moon!" I called, but she was gone already, not caring about me. At all.
I stomped on the ground, panicking. The offence for leaving the territory under the age of 2 years without an adult wolf was expulsion, which meant you would be kicked out. I only had three choices: one, run to Star and tell him, two, find help, or three, race into the valley to find Moon.
I took a deep breath and thought about the options. If I told Star, Moon might never be found and Mum and Dad would be mad. If I went with the second option, then whoever I asked might tell Star. If I went with the last, I may never come back...
I decided to go with Three. I didn't want to lose Moon anyway. Taking another deep breath, I prepared myself to enter the valley. However, just as I leapt forward, another wolf collided with me in mid-air.
"Oof!" I grunted as both of us fell.
"Stop!" the wolf ordered. It was Diamond.
"Dia...?" I trailed off as she dragged me further into the base.
"Where are you taking me now?" I asked.
"You'll see," said Diamond, barely looking at me. Soon, Diamond stopped in front of a tall oak tree. Its fat trunk grew branches so big I could climb on it. Not that I wanted to.
I walked out of Diamond's grasp and nearly tripped over the tree's roots protruding from the ground.
"Why are we here?" I asked Dia.
"This oak tree is not normal. It has this," Diamond said, pushing me forward.
"Whoa!" I yelped, my feet slipping. Before I knew it, I fell into the hole between the roots.
Thump! I landed on a hard surface, and hence, fell awkwardly on the floor. As I got up, Diamond fell behind me. I dusted myself.
"This place is my hiding spot," explained Dia, "as Dad and Bro always talk about Alphas, leadership, political matters, whereas I'm supposed to NOT hear anything about Alphas and such, as I'm a Luna, " she added.
It must be boring and stressful, I thought. "Were you stressed?" I asked as Diamond lead me further into the soil underground.
"A little," replied Diamond as we settled into her abode, "Brother was very stressed, 'cause Dad's counting on him to become the next Alpha,"
"I see," I nodded at Diamond.
"You'd better leave," said Dia. "If Dad finds out, he will kill you,"
"Um......so what do I do?" I asked Diamond.
"Don't let Star know," she warned. From her voice, I knew better.
"Ahem," cut in a new voice, "I'm right here,"

Diamond's eyes widened. Her face stiffened. I gulped. We turned to see a stern-faced Star staring at the two of us.
"Diamond, how could you! You're the Alpha pup!" started Star, looking very offended.
"I can explain-" Diamond was cut off when Star yelled, "The pup is not 2 years old yet!" Diamond whined and cowered under Star's glare. As Star had yelled, 'the pup', he cast a suspicious look at me. His eyes narrowed warily. Glancing at Dia, he lowered his voice, "I'll talk to you later."
Approaching me, he cast a shadow over the mud soil,
"What do you want?" he barked. I winced. Star sounded very strict.
"N-nothing," I stammered.
"First, you run into my territory. Then, your sister runs out of the territory even though she's only one and a half years old!" cried Star.
"The second doesn't relate to me," I pointed out. A shiver trembled down my spine. I could feel how furious Star was.
"I don't care!" lashed out Star. Even Dia winced. My ears stung. Star seemed to have gathered all his anger. However, he managed to collect himself.
"I'm going to tell your parents," he warned," And your mother..." Star was cut off when a guard suddenly fell into the hole. All eyes swung to him as he turned pink. Embarrassed, the wolf got up.
"Sir," he began, bowing at Star, "our team has spotted a wounded Beta wolf pup of the name Moon,"
Diamond's eyes widened once again. This time, however, it was filled with astonishment and worry. I myself had been so shocked I just stood there, rooted to the ground like an apple tree. I could tell Star was anxious too. As the leader, the stress and pressure were heavier than a bag of boulders.
"Bring me to the guard post right away!" he ordered. Turning to us, he added hastily, "Come with me, you two."
We followed the guard to the other side of the territory where a small crowd of wolves had gathered around something near the borders. When they noticed us, they immediately cleared the way, leaving us to see Moon on the ground, her paw on a blood-stained gash on her side. We all hurried towards her.
"Moon!" I cried, crouching down beside her.
Star only took one look at Moon when he called two wolves in the crowd. "Get the Beta wolves and the Healers," he cajoled. The wolves bowed before moving off to find my parents and the Healers. Diamond crouched down beside me, took Moon's paw off, and placed her paw there, trying to staunch the wound.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Well..." was all Moon could say when Dad, Moon and Patches appeared all at once.
"Moon!" they cried. All crouched down beside Diamond and me.
"What...what even happened?" yelped Mum. "Who did this?" she yelled, pointing a paw at everyone, even the wolves in the crowd, who shied away. Her paw landed on Diamond. "You..." she glared, "why must you do this to my pup!" she sobbed, pushing Diamond's paw off and replacing it with her own. Turning to Moon, she assured, "Mum's here. You'll be fine," just as a team of Healers turned up and pulled her away from Moon.
Dad suddenly sidestepped Diamond and me. "Now, listen here, if I find out that you did this, you won't be taken nicely..."
I blocked Diamond from Dad's view. "She didn't do it," I said firmly in defence.
"How do you know?" Dad asked warily. "You've only known her for a day!"
"She was with me," I explained.
Dad scoffed. "And how can you prove that?" he questioned.
"Because they were with me," cut in Star.
All three of us turned to see Star behind us. He seems to sneak up on wolves easily, I thought.
"I can assure you, Nighty, that they did not do the evil act," Star informed Dad. There was always this sense of safety and assurance whenever Star was around. Perhaps that was why Star was the Alpha in the first place.
"Right...erm...for your safety, please proceed to the pack den," Star's orders interrupted my train of thoughts. "We need to make sure that...um...whatever did this is...er...not harming anyone else," he stammered.
"Which is...?" Diamond asked as Star ushered us into the Pack's den.
"Dia, that is what I am trying to find out," assured Star as we hurried inside.
~
Inside the den, it was very crowded. Wolves of every colour, size and age were squeezed inside the den. A group of brown wolves were fighting over a fox the hunters had killed and several guards were passing orders from Dad, Mum and Star. The Gamma lead us to a corner of the den where Black, Patches, and several other pups were sitting, each of them holding a chicken leg. Black handed Diamond a leg, however, I did not have any food.
"Umm..." I interrupted awkwardly, "where's my chicken leg?"
There was silence as the wolf pups continued chewing on their food. Determined to get a meal, I carefully examined every one of the wolves' mouths. Most of the wolves were chewing on their chicken leg, but Black appeared to be eating something else. I stared at his mouth and waited. A moment or two later, Black's mouth opened and I spotted bits of chicken between his teeth. I sighed. Black had taken my food after all.
As I stood there, my stomach pleading with me for food, a piece of chicken leg caught my attention. It was right in front of my nose, and I smelt the wonderful aroma of fresh meat. I turned to whoever was holding it. It was Diamond. She had torn off a piece and given it to me. I took the piece. "Thanks" I thanked her, tearing the piece up and wolfing it down. Diamond smiled. However, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Black scowling.
~
After half an hour, we were allowed to exit the den as the Alphas, my parents, the Gamma, and the Delta had triple-checked the territory.
"Dad, is it safe out there?" I asked, placing a tentative paw onto the ground just outside the cave.
"Yes, it is," Dad reassured me. Although I nodded and continued walking, I knew deep down inside, Dad was worried for the pack and his rank.
Later, Dad, Mum, Patches and I went to visit Moon, who was recovering in the Pack den after the Healers had cleaned her wound and bandaged it with several leaves tied together. By the time Dad and I reached there, Mum and Patches were looking after Moon; Mum was feeding Moon some meat, while Patches sat at the other side.
"Are you okay, Moon?" I asked as we approached the trio.
Moon nodded just as Mum fed her another bit of meat. To my surprise, Mum looked normal, like Moon never explained who or what caused the gash to Mum. Maybe Mum was too busy looking after Moon to bother asking her. As Dad consulted a Healer on Moon's condition, Star entered the cave.
"Nice to see you better, Moon," he smiled. Mum, Dad and the Healer all bowed at him. He nodded back and turned to face me.
"By the way, Everblaze, your parents have consulted me to tutor you on hunting prey," Star told me. I gasped in astonishment and excitement. Dad had kept his promise after all.
"Yay! Thanks!" I thanked Dad and Mum. They grinned. I faced Star once again. "When do we begin?" I asked.
Star chuckled. "Now, of course!"
I squealed in delight as we headed towards the forested area behind the Pack's cave. "What are we hunting today?" I asked curiously, cocking my head at Star, who brought me to the forest.
"We'll start with a squirrel. Then, we will hunt a raccoon. Tomorrow, we will hunt some birds. In your last lesson, you will be tasked to kill a fox. No assistance," explained Star as we walked on the muddy ground, the smell of plants entered my nose, and several birds chirped aloud their cheeky calls.
"Oof!" I grunted as I accidentally tripped over a thick tree root protruding from the ground.
"Careful 'round here, Everblaze!" warned Star, helping me get back on my feet. We continued trudging along, admiring the huge trees, unique plants, and flowers of a thousand vivid colours. The scene was so beautiful that I could have stayed there for hours if I wasn't there to hunt.
Suddenly, Star stopped short in his tracks. He froze as if he heard something. Since I was busy enjoying the sound of wildlife, I walked straight into Star.
"Ouch!" I grumbled, rubbing my sore head.
"Shh!" Star silenced me, eyes on something in front. I craned my neck to have a good look.
Behind a giant acacia tree was a squirrel. My eyes widened.
"Okay, Everblaze," muttered Star," when I signal to you," he nudged the air with his nose," like that, you jump forward and surprise the squirrel," I replied," But I don't know how!"
"Then I'll show you, answered Star. I sat down on the grass and watched. Star crept up to the tree, then he crouched. He placed his front paws and stretched them out, like a bow, except that his eyes were full of determination.
All of a sudden, Star leapt into the air, paws outstretched as he sliced through the air like a knife. THUMP. The squirrel heard the noise and tried to escape, but by that time Star had his claws on it. He pinned it to the ground and tackled it, giving the squirrel a powerful swipe on the head. Star's reflexes were so fast that it happened in a few seconds and he was gone in a blur of movement.
"Wow," I gasped in awe five seconds later, "how did you do it?"
Star chuckled humbly. "Come, you're next," he gestured at a few other squirrels.
I smiled. "Deal."
~
After five futile attempts, I finally succeeded in hunting a squirrel. Whilst I may look like a noob hunter, Star was impressed. "On average, wolves who are new to hunting take about 12 times to catch a squirrel!" I gasped. Star patted me on the head. "You're good. I once had a wolf who swiped himself on the nose, lost his balance, and fell to the ground!" Right after that, he laughed heartily. It was hard to watch someone laugh so loudly and yet keep still. So I giggled along too.
Out of the blue, Star stopped laughing. He, on the other hand, checked his surroundings sharply. I stopped too.
"What's wrong, Star?" I asked with concern to the Alpha.
"I was just checking to see if the pup was here," he explained before we burst into laughter again.
Later, Star and I headed back to the Pack den as it was almost time for dinner. Star suggested that I give Moon my squirrel as the portion was portable so Moon would not need to leave the den.
"How are you feeling, Moon?" I asked as Mum handed her the squirrel.
"Much better, thank you, Everblaze," replied Moon as she popped a piece of meat into her mouth.
"Mum, I need to talk to Moon," I insisted.
'Need?" repeated Mum. "Moon needs rest, don't you?" she said, turning to Moon and pulling up the fur blanket over her.
Moon pushed it back down. "Mum, you have made me sleep early every day, but wake me up late. That's enough sleep!" emphasised Moon.
Mum sighed. "Fine. But don't talk so long, okay?" she reminded, walking out of the den to begin her shift as a guard.
We heaved a sigh of relief. I turned to Moon. "Nice one, Moon!" I complimented her. Moon smiled.
"Thank you. By the way, do you want to know what happened?" I nodded eagerly.
"Well, when I left you at the borders, I instantly regretted it," Moon explained. "But by that time, I had lost my way. Every tree looked the same. After a while, I decided to continue making my way to the valleys and mountains. This way, I could find my way back to the Base more easily."
"However, on my way back, I heard the rustling of leaves. I turned, only to be faced with a maze of trees. I warily turned back and continued. A moment later, I heard the crunching of grass behind me. Turning once again, I still did not see anyone. This time, I did not trust my senses. I started running the way instead," continued Moon as I nodded. "Just as I slowed down to catch my breath, I heard paws coming to me, then an awful bolt of pain at my left. Wincing, I held my left side and looked down. Blood was dripping out from a wound. I staggered slightly as I turned to face the creature behind me."
Just like that, Moon stopped. She bent down to look at her bandaged side. "Who or what was it?" I pressed on, nudging Moon slightly.
"A cougar?" Moon answered, still staring below.
"Recognise it?" I asked.
Moon looked up. She stared into my eyes, her paws trembling. I was shocked to see that her face was pale.
Speaking in a shaky voice, she uttered, "It's the same cougar who tried to kill you that day."
